A snippet of advice for our upcoming ayurvedacharyas :)

You must have started with your lectures probably..till now you would have probably attended the anatomy dissection lab..I know for some of you its the only place which actually makes you feel like a doctor in the first year. The smell of formalin, the sight of the shriveled dead body lying on the dissection table and not to forget the stained aprons...
Till now, you would have probably come across Padarth Vigyan and not to forget the hideous Sanskrit lectures.(especially for those who didn't have Sanskrit in their school) The 'Natva saraswati devi' would have probably sat on your tongues by this time probably.
It would be a great experience for some learning about the Doshas and off course accessing the Prakriti of their fellow classmates and friends and at the same time it may be a distressing experience for others to come across such unfamiliar terms which one was never acquainted to before joining BAMS.
So, for those of who have started loving this ancient wisdom,I am really happy for you and for those of who have not yet been able to apprehend this science, give it some time and lots of your patience and its not going to disappoint you.

Anyway to whichever ilk you belong, here is my piece of advice which I think may help you in the first and the upcoming years of your BAMS.

  1. Develop your trust in Ayurveda
                              Raj-Bharosa hai na mujhpe
                              Simran-Khud se zyada..

Can you recall this scene from DDLJ. a how our hearts started racing on watching this.Remember how Simran agreed to elope with Rahul just on the grounds of this trust.
Believe me, each and everything we do and each and every relation of ours revolves on this simple thing 'TRUST'.
You go to a particular doctor when you are sick just because you trust him.You are friends with a particular person just because of this trust and you love someone just because of this trust.
Same goes with Ayurveda.Have you ever seen an allopathic doctor or an MBBS student saying bad stuff about their pathy, no matter how many side effects are associated with the Paracetamols and Zantacs we pop on every bout of fever or acidity.
Why cant we develop the same trust in our system of medicine as them?
Ayurveda is effective,it has its limitations I know probably because of the adulteration of drugs and the destruction of many of our ancient texts, but it nowhere means that it is a science in vain.
Believe in Ayurveda and trust me, I am not exaggerating, anything is possible with it.

2.Don't run away from Sanskrit
I have personally come across students who avoid Sanskrit like a plague in the first year. Its pretty normal if you are completely new to the language.Your steady pace would gradually help you to understand it.Also try to memorize as many Sanskrit 'shlokas' as you can. Don't ever think that you can't memorize the shlokas. There isn't a single thing the human mind can't do.You will eventually be surprised because learning the 'shlokas' would actually help in retaining the concepts for a longer time.It does take a longer time to learn the 'shlokas' but soon you would realize that it's worth all the efforts and time.

3.Try incorporating Ayurvedic terminology in your daily talks
This is the best way to befriend Ayurveda. When you start relating Ayurvedic concepts with your body, learning it becomes a hell lot easier.
For example, you might have studied that an increase in the 'pitta dosha' manifests itself in the form of acidity & burning sensation in the body. So instead of using the terms like 'acidity' and 'burning sensation', you can simply say something like 'pitta dosha' has increased.
Similarly, if you have already learnt to assess 'Prakriti',you can advice your friends and relatives to follow and avoid certain things as per their body types like people with 'Pitta pradhan Prakriti' should avoid using excess of spicy food.
These simple exercises would eventually help in gaining a better understanding of this science. The more you relate, the more you will learn.
And at the end,I would just like to add that don't be discouraged if someone tries to put you down. There are people who mock Ayurveda by using terms like 'pudiya wale doctor' for the Ayurvedic physicians. As I have already said in my first post that steer away from negativism.Ayurveda has a lot of potential. If someone practicing Chinese alternative medicine can get a Nobel Prize in Medicine, why can't an Ayurvedic doctor achieve the same.Trust the science and you will surely excel in it one day.
