Incorporating Ayurveda in your daily life
Hey friends,
So,I have this engineer friend who stresses a lot on how should I not use my phone when the battery is crucially low.I know you might be wondering that what's new in that. Thanx to the forwarded WhatsApp messages that we all know about how harmful those rays or whatever you choose to call them can be which are emitted in plenty when the phone's battery is below a certain level. But the main difference between my understanding and his knowledge is that he knows what actually goes inside the device when the battery is low, which means that he has incorporated his learning into his day-to-day practice.
2. Don't blindly follow anything which the folks claim to be Ayurvedic(or according to the principles of Ayurveda)
Now, this is serious. I have lost the count of the number of instances I have come across when I have found people saying that Papaya leaf extract is the Ayurvedic cure for dengue.
If you are one the them, I am sorry to inform you it's not so. NOWHERE, I repeat, NOWHERE is it mentioned in any of the Ayurvedic texts that papaya juice extract is the cure for platelet drop in dengue. You would say com'on, What's the big deal in that? But there is. All these false beliefs do harm Ayurveda in some way or the other. These things, kind of encourage people into self medication and when such pseudo Ayurvedic experiments fail/ do more harm than good, then come things like 'Ayurvedic dawa li na, isliye aisa hua hai'. So, we need to question ourselves on what we are asked to follow or hear in media as well as educate the people around us to stay away from such false beliefs.
(I would do a separate blog post on this topic regarding the popular beliefs which the people, media claims to be Ayurvedic, but its nowhere near to that)
Well you would ask me how is this related to incorporating Ayurveda in your daily life. Well, my friends, Ayurveda talks about chintya which is the power of thinking, vichara which is the power to think or analyze and ooh which is the power of assuming as the qualities of mind. And that's what I have asked you to earlier in this post. I know, I twisted things a bit but my point was to encourage you to question and think over everything which comes before you.
3. Try using Ayurvedic remedies for daily life problems
I am not a random blog over the internet which would go into something like '20 Ayurvedic tips for glowing skin' or stuff like 'weight loss through Ayurveda' and would go on including everything ranging from aloe vera to tomatoes and stuff like that claiming them to be Ayurvedic remedies for pimples or blackeads( when they are SIMPLY NOT)
You, as Ayurvedic students need to understand that just because something is natural does not mean that it is Ayurvedic(again a separate blog post on this)
So, here, I want to add that use something to cure your ailments only when you know how it works.
For example, many of us suffer from allergic rhinitis due to seasonal changes. You might be well informed till now that allergy mostly is a manifestation of Pitta dosha, and as you know, haridra or turmeric is well versed to curb any allergies and balances pitta dosha owing to its Tikta Rasa. So, turmeric milk can prove to be an excellent remedy for allergic rhinitis in some cases.
In the same way, you might have read that ginger is excellent for ailments like indigestion and loss of taste. So, next time when you don't feel like eating due to loss of appetite, try chewing a piece of ginger with some salt on it. These two ingredients due to their Katu Rasa and Lavana Rasa respectively, would balance your Jatharagni or the 'digestive fire' and you would regain your apetite.
P.S- Again don't follow anything which is written here or somewhere blindly. Follow or incorporate stuff in your lives only after analyzing it. It would be then, when it would be possible for us to clear the doubts regarding Ayurveda which have flocked in people's minds out of nowhere.

You see, from childhood, we are always given a kaadha or in general terms a concoction made of ginger, tulsi etc.when we have a cough or cold. Everyone including your youngest sibling knows that it works on the ailments so what have you gained by studying Ayurveda. Everyone knows those little totkas or the home remedies for ailments such as a minor headache, cough, colds etc, right. Yes, they do. But it's we who know how that tulsi and ginger actually work. A little off today's topic but I wanted to share this with you because I kept wondering that for almost an year after taking admission in BAMS.
So, coming back to the today's topic, I will state here, simple ways by means of which, you can embody Ayurveda in your daily lives. Simple and practical ways which would help you as well as galvanize those in your close vicinity to follow Ayurvedic principles.
1. Get up early in the morning
I know, it is something which is easier said than done. It is something which probably your parents, teachers, books and every other article over the net which has been written for a noble cause keeping your health and well being in mind asks you to do. But, it is the second most difficult thing to do for us students, the first place off course goes to keeping that doomed cell phone on one side and going to bed early at night.
I struggle with this 'get up early' thing everyday but as I have stated, this blog is my journey more than yours so, let's look into the benefits of getting up early according to Ayurveda.
So, you will study in Ashtang hridaya 'Chapter 2', the concept of 'Dincharya' or how one's daily course of activities should be right from getting early to going to bed at night. The chapter's first verse itself asks one to get up early desirably between 4:26 and 6 a.m in the morning. Do you know why?
Well, the time stated above is the time of 'vaat dosha' which is responsible for the proper movements of bowels (do you know that waking u early can prove to be an excellent remedy for constipation in some cases) retaining what you have learnt(and that's why morning is the best time for studying) , regulating your thoughts i.e steering your mind away from negativism. Therefore, it is necessary to wake u early in the morning so that all your life processes stay in place.
